Taken from his parents as a child prodigy in the early 1960s, Alex Jarod spent decades isolated under the instruction of Sydney, a psychiatrist at The Centre where his computer like mind could be offered to the highest bidder. As an adult Jarod fled The Centre with two other "Pretenders," people of such high intelligence that they can master any profession and masquerade in any occupation, making them a threat to national security. Meanwhile Jerod and anyone like him must elude the alluring, single-minded Miss Parker and her group of Centre operatives, who desperately want him and the others back.
